EXPERIENCE BREXIT ROLES

UNITED KINGDOM

You are leaving the EU, but your team is polarized. The Government wants to deliver Brexit to fulfill the 'people’s will,’ while the 'Remain’ opposition wants to minimize the effects of Brexit.

EUROPEAN UNION

You have never experienced a member state exiting the Union. Therefore, you need unity to protect the interests of all your members and prevent the future domino effect of others leaving.

NEGOTIATE BREXIT DEAL

ROUND 1

DIVORCE BILL

The Divorce Bill is the amount of funding requested by the EU to cover the budget arrangements the UK signed up to in the 2014 budget planning round. The UK decided to leave the EU in 2016, partway through the budget cycle, and there is political disagreement if the UK should honour this payment agreement.

How much money should the UK pay to the EU?

ROUND 1

ROUND 2

JURISDICTION OF ECJ

The UK government claims that as the British are no longer in the EU and can no longer contribute to EU laws, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) should have no jurisdiction over British citizens after Brexit. However, the EU argues that the laws the UK agreed to during the UK’s time in the EU should be upheld.

Could the external to the UK court decide on the UK laws?

ROUND 2

ROUND 3

IRISH BORDER

When the UK leaves, the Irish border will reappear as an external border of the European Union. It could become the 'hard border’ as the EU has strict regulations on commerce across its external border and access to the EU’s internal Single Market. However, neither the UK nor the EU wants a „hard border.”

What should the Irish border look like?

ROUND 3

ROUND 4

CITIZEN RIGHTS

What will happen to the three million EU citizens living in the UK and to the two million UK citizens living in EU countries after the UK leaves the EU? Before Brexit, they all enjoyed EU citizenship and equal rights to live, work, study, and retire in each EU member state.

Should five million UK and EU citizens keep their acquired rights?

ROUND 4

ROUND 5

SINGLE MARKET

Brexit means no access of the post-Brexit UK to the EU’s Single Market. The EU is the largest free-trade area in the world. In principle, the UK would like to remain in the Single Market without freedom of movement. However, the EU stands firm on the Four Freedoms being a single package.

Could the UK ‘cherry-pick’ from the Four Freedoms?

ROUND 5

PLAN YOUR STRATEGY

’How to Win Brexit?’ is a game that tests your skills at the negotiating table, charisma, and ability to persuade the opponent. You will face polarized positions with conflicting individual and team goals. You will constantly have to plan ahead and react on the spot to outsmart your opponents and achieve your objectives.

However, after the game, you will face a baffling question that the British and the EUropeans still cannot answer:

IN BREXIT, WHAT IS A 'VICTORY’?

WHAT DO TEST PLAYERS SAY?

The format of the game allows for divergent interests among team members, which makes tricky negotiating positions possible.

Great team-building exercise!

The game brilliantly shows that even if given goals align with your position as a player, a diverse set of interests can emerge. It breaks the idea of „one way” to victory in politics.

Super intriguing & good quality time!

Loved the marvellous illustrations of the political actors involved in real-world Brexit. Each negotiating round includes fantastic drawings.

Aesthetically beautiful!

I enjoyed negotiating with the opponent and reflecting on my position. It gives a nice dynamic to the game. It puts into perspective the actual mechanisms of real political life.

Highly recommended for all passionate about politics and board games!

I like the multi-level negotiations involved in the game! I had a fun time interacting with the other participants while playing.

Brexit is a complicated puzzle, and the game is an excellent reflection of that. Amazing idea!

Great that the in-game 'Breaking news’ cards exposed alternative Brexit scenarios and forced us to react to unexpected developments. We saw who was a queen and a pawn in our Brexit game!

Brilliant how the game presents Brexit as chess-like!
